He is the only child of Irmelin (née Indenbirken),a German-American legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an Italian-American comic book artist and underground comics publisher. They divorced when DiCaprio was one year old, and he lived with his mother and maternal grandparents in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
DiCaprio has said that he was a "hyperactive kid" who was "always getting into trouble." He attended Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES),a public magnet school in Los Angeles. He dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to pursue an acting career.
