Early Life and Education

Deixem Que Leiam Amy Vatne Bintliff was born on April 12, 1928, in the small town of Westby, Wisconsin, USA. Her parents instilled in her a love of reading and education, values that would shape her life's work. After graduating from high school, she attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Missionary Work in Brazil

In 1952, Bintliff embarked on a journey that would profoundly impact her life. Inspired by the teachings of her church, she traveled to Brazil as a missionary with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). She settled in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, where she witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of illiteracy and poverty.

Founding Deixem Que Leiam

Driven by a deep compassion for the marginalized communities she encountered, Bintliff established Deixem Que Leiam (Let Them Read) in 1963. This non-profit organization aimed to promote literacy and education among the poor and disenfranchised. Through a network of volunteer teachers and community centers, Deixem Que Leiam offered reading classes, tutoring, and educational workshops.

Empowering Women and Girls

Bintliff recognized the crucial role that women and girls play in breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. She developed innovative programs specifically tailored to their needs, such as a literacy program for pregnant women and a scholarship fund for young women pursuing higher education. By empowering women to become literate and self-sufficient, Deixem Que Leiam fostered a more equitable and just society.

Expanding Literacy Access

In addition to its grassroots initiatives, Deixem Que Leiam also partnered with government agencies and other organizations to expand literacy access on a larger scale. Bintliff played a key role in the development of national literacy policies and the creation of community libraries throughout Brazil. Her tireless efforts helped bring the transformative power of reading to countless individuals.

Recognition and Legacy

Bintliff's extraordinary contributions to literacy and education have been widely recognized both in Brazil and internationally. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Brazilian Order of Merit and the International Literacy Prize from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. Her legacy continues to inspire and empower literacy activists around the world.

A Tireless Advocate for Social Justice

Throughout her life, Bintliff remained a tireless advocate for social justice and human rights. She used her platform to speak out against poverty, inequality, and discrimination. Her activism extended beyond literacy, encompassing issues such as gender equality, environmental protection, and peacebuilding.

Deixem Que Leiam Amy Vatne Bintliff is a true pioneer in the field of literacy and education. Her unwavering dedication to empowering marginalized communities has transformed countless lives and contributed to a more equitable and just society. Her legacy as a literacy activist, educator, and social justice advocate continues to inspire and motivate generations to come.
