Early Life

Sandra Gulland was born in 1899 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. From a young age, she was exposed to the horrors of war. Her father had served in the Boer War, and her mother had nursed wounded soldiers.

In 1914, when World War 1 broke out, Sandra was just 15 years old. She immediately volunteered to help the war effort. She worked as a nurse's aide at a local hospital, and she also helped to organize fundraising events for the Red Cross.

Service as a Stretcher Bearer

In 1916, Sandra joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service. This organization was dedicated to providing medical care to wounded soldiers. Sandra was assigned to a unit that was sent to France.

As a stretcher bearer, Sandra's job was to care for wounded soldiers and transport them to safety. She often worked under fire, and she risked her own life to save the lives of others.

Sandra's bravery was recognized on several occasions. She was awarded the Military Medal for her actions in the Battle of the Somme. She was also mentioned in dispatches for her work in the Battle of Passchendaele.

Later Life

After the war, Sandra continued to work in the medical field. She became a nurse and midwife, and she worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.

Sandra was a tireless advocate for peace. She spoke out against war and violence, and she worked to promote peace and reconciliation.

Sandra Gulland died in 1989 at the age of 90. She is remembered as one of the bravest and most compassionate women of her generation.
